The Author Behind Hobbies & Homemade

Welcome to Hobbies & Homemade!  Whether you are a fellow mother, hobby addict, healthcare worker, or just enjoy reading another’s words, I hope you find something you enjoy in this blog.

I suppose for my first post, I should write a little introduction of myself and the types of posts you can expect to find here.  (Although I highly suspect that these posts could lead to a large variety of topics!)

Where to start!?  My name is Cortney, and I am a 27-year-old wife, mother, and hobby addict.  I have an amazing husband and a happy 16-month-old son, as well as a crazily energetic 4-year-old lab-husky mix.  By day, I work as a radiation therapist, killing cancer and trying to make the scary treatment journey just a little less so for each patient I encounter.  In the time that I’m not at work, I’m spending time with family and trying my best not to annoy them too much with the countless number of hobbies I’ve acquired over the years.  More on that to come…

For as long as I can remember, I have had such a diverse collection of interests.  I loved school because every topic piqued my curiosity and left me wanting to learn more (except maybe gym…sorry!)  I loved art for how it allowed me to keep myself busy while letting my mind rest and de-stress.  I loved math and the way there was always a correct answer and how every problem was a puzzle to be solved.  I loved science for the way it created space for me to make my own hypotheses and figure out more and more about the world around me.  I loved English/language arts and the way it helped me to become creative with words and use them differently based on my intent, as well as the chance it provided to escape into a story and live many lives within my one.  I’ll gladly own up to being a book worm, math nerd, science geek, or whatever other label you come up with when it comes to enjoying learning!

When it came down to it, I landed in the sciences as my main study going into college, though I enjoyed nearly every GenEd I took over the years (nearly…ahem, anything with public speaking involved…you were the outlier!)  I attended Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania for my B.S. in Biology (go Huskies!) and followed up that education with a two-year program to become a licensed radiation therapist.  I have found that I love working directly with patients and providing care for an extended period of time (many for up to 7 weeks, but that may become a post in itself!)  Despite choosing a job in healthcare, I still love my arts, reading, and DIY projects.

It has always been a running joke in my family that “you know Cortney is home when you find hobby pieces lying around the house!”  Fortunately for them, it’s only my ever-patient husband that has to deal with that now!  I’ll be the first to admit I leave stuff lying around with every intent to return to it, only to start another project instead.  Oops.  You’ll often find yarn on the coffee table, paintbrushes on the dining table, books stacked on the dresser, sourdough starter rising in the kitchen, and tinctures infusing in the hutch.  I can’t help it!

My intent on creating this blog is to find and support others who can’t resist learning a new hobby at any given time (hobby addicts support group, anyone?), regardless of how many they already have in progress. I would love to share my experiences and what I have learned in each new skill I’ve added to my repertoire (or tried to and failed, because there have been some! Hello, sewing by hand!)  I hope to add in some posts on parenting and motherhood, as well as on radiation therapy (because there aren’t many informational blogs on the career out there!) and I believe almost everyone should be able to find something relatable in these posts.  My hope is that you, my dear readers, will be able to relate and laugh along with me, as well as find some useful information as you all follow along with my attempts at, well… everything!  Hopefully I don’t annoy my husband too much along the way! 😉 Just don’t mention to him my hopes of building a roadside farmstand to put out this summer…yet!  I hope you stick around for the ride!
